When I was given the question, what is the teen of today, I was trying to find a word or phrase that summed all teen up. I was thinking of words like rebellious, adventurous, excited, etc. Then I thought teens are not the same. Each one of us have our own individual personality and goals. It is impossible to generalize teens because you will never incorporate all of the different people that we are. Not all teens are rebellious or adventurous. That is where adults and society get us wrong. They believe that all teens are the same. They believe that we are all lazy and want nothing, but fun out of life. Like Holden in "The Cather in the Rye". Holden just wanted to find his way in the world. People judged Holden and thought that he did not care about anything, when really he cared about the most important things in life. Holden cared about being genuine and he cared about his family. Each teen has their own beliefs, goals, dreams, and personalities. Who is the world to come and judge teens? The generalization of teens is what is going to be the downfall. Instead of supporting and helping teens out society just points at all of the bad that we do. I am not saying that teens are angles, because let me tell you we are not. The people that generalize are not helping in any way.
There is only one word that can sum up all teens, curious. Every teen is curious of where they will be in twenty years. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift should be curiosity." Without curiosity the world would be plain. The teens of today help to make the world a place where you can be spontaneous and dream big. The lives of teens are a journey. Just as Siddartha and Santiago went on their journey in "Siddhartha" and "The Alchemist". Everyone teens go on a journey with a goal in mind. Siddhartha wanted to find enlightenment, and Santiago wanted to find treasure. Both of them learned so much more on the journey then they did when they go to their destination. It is the journey not the finish. Without dreams we have no where to go. When you have dreams you have no where to go, but up. Teens have no limits when it comes to their future. We all need to be a little more like our old pal George and the world would be a better and more creative place.
I believe that the literature that we have read this year summed up the teen in a good way. It may not have seemed like it on the surface, but when you really looked down deep into each of the characters you could relate. Each teen is different and wants to find their place and that is what the literature to me showed.
